Stop 1: Oxcart Ride
Heading toward the tiny villages on the bicycle about 40mins from your hotels to begin your oxcart ride is going to be excited. Your guides will introduce you about themselves and the tour highlights. The locals are ready to take you on the oxcart and make sure your safety and the guide swill always with you to show the interesting things along the way.
Stop 2: Handmade baskets
Leading on from this, you’ll see how the people of Siem Reap weave and trade in handmade baskets. Siem Reap, like everywhere in Cambodia, was severely affected by the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 and 79, and aside from the terrible loss of life, many upcoming industries were crippled. These handmade baskets are just one example of how the rural economy survived, relying on nature as it always did.
Stop 3: Local Market
Next up, you’ll ride through Siem Reap’s bustling market, where you’ll have the opportunity to browse and purchase dozens of handmade souvenirs, as well as many delicious local foods. As ever your guide will be happy to answer any questions you have, and explain the central role markets play in Cambodia’s rural economy.
Stop 4: Rice Wine
After cycling along the main road out of Siem Reap, your tour guide will take you to a rice wine distillery. The drink has a long history in this particular region, and is popular all over the Cambodian countryside. The locals use rice wine not only for recreation, but also as a natural, holistic medicine for various illnesses.
