This stop is intended to teach you all about the fruit native to Battambang, and will allow you to meet one particular resident who has been trading in dried banana for over 20 years. Here, you’ll learn how this form of agriculture supports many families, allowing them to maintain their simple way of life. Many of the residents here are used to our tours, and are happy to welcome you into their homes.
Description
STOP 1: RICE PAPER
Donteav village is nestled in the north region of Battambang, roughly seven kilometres from the town centre. As tourism in Cambodia has grown in popularity, this little village has built a huge reputation for its quaint, hand-made products. On this part of the tour, you’ll experience the processes involved in making rice paper, a fundamental in almost all Asian cuisine such as spring rolls.
STOP 2: DRIED BANANA
This stop is intended to teach you all about the fruit native to Battambang, and will allow you to meet one particular resident who has been trading in dried banana for over 20 years. Here, you’ll learn how this form of agriculture supports many families, allowing them to maintain their simple way of life. Many of the residents here are used to our tours, and are happy to welcome you into their homes.
STOP 3: RICE WINE
After visiting dried banana and rice paper, your guides will take you to visit rice wine production. Here you will learn a lot about the Battambang resident habits and norms. Besides watching them produce the rice wine there will also be samples available that you are welcome to try. According to my past experience, when I took the guests there to try the rice wine they said it was really good, warm and also smelled nice.
STOP 4: KHMER NOODLE
Regardless of your background, this is almost guaranteed to offer a new experience, as most people outside of rural Cambodia have never even seen a manual wheat pounder, let alone be given the chance to use it! The simple yet intriguing processes here have been a cornerstone of eastern society for centuries, and provided countless generations with a livelihood.
STOP 5: FISH PASTE MAKING
Up next we will bike the route taking us to the fish paste market, known as the biggest fish paste market in Battambang. The smell is a bit strong especially if you are not used to it, but don't worry we won't stay too long. At this stop we will teach you more about Cambodian fishery areas, where they can find the fish and what they do with them.
STOP 6: BAMBOO RICE CAKE
As we wind down towards the end of our tour, we’ll all share a special countryside delicacy: the bamboo rice cake. After your tour guide gives a short talk on local rice cake production, you’ll be able to give the bikes a rest and enjoy, as you look across the breath taking landscape and reflect on all that you’ve experienced.
